Top 10 things to pack for a Tanzania Volunteer Trip
Preparing for a volunteer journey with Africa Watoto is more than just a trip it’s the start of a life-changing experience. To ensure you can focus entirely on making an impact in the lives of the children and the community, we have put together the ultimate packing guide. Here are the top 10 essentials you shouldn’t leave home without: 1. Modest and Culturally Respectful Clothing Tanzanian culture, especially in rural areas where Africa Watoto operates, is conservative. Pack lightweight, breathable clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. Long skirts, capris, and loose trousers (like linen pants) are perfect for staying cool while respecting local customs. 2. Universal Power Adapter (Type G) Tanzania primarily uses the British-style three-pin plug (Type G). To keep your phone and camera charged so you can capture every special moment, ensure you have a reliable universal adapter. 3. High-SPF Sunscreen and Wide-Brimmed Hat The East African sun is powerful, even on cloudy days. Protect your skin during outdoor activities and village walks with a high-quality sunscreen and a hat. Your future self will thank you after a long day of working with the kids! 4. DEET-Based Mosquito Repellent Prevention is key when it comes to mosquito-borne illnesses. Bring a strong repellent to apply in the evenings and early mornings. We also recommend packing a few "itch-relief" creams just in case you get a stray bite. 5. Sturdy Walking Shoes or Hiking Sandals You’ll likely spend a lot of time on your feet, navigating uneven dirt roads or playing games with the children. A pair of broken-in, comfortable walking shoes or sturdy sports sandals (like Chacos or Tevas) is essential. 6. Portable Power Bank In many regions, power outages can happen. Having a high-capacity power bank ensures you aren't left stranded with a dead phone or flashlight when you need it most. 7. Reusable Water Bottle with a Filter Staying hydrated is vital. To reduce plastic waste in the communities we serve, bring a durable, reusable water bottle. If it has a built-in filtration system (like a LifeStraw), even better! 8. Small Gifts for the Children (Stickers, Bubbles, Stationery) As an Africa Watoto volunteer, you’ll be surrounded by eager learners. Small, lightweight items like stickers, colored pencils, bubbles, or footballs (deflated) are incredible icebreakers and bring immense joy to the kids. 9. Basic First Aid Kit and Personal Meds While we have local clinics, it's wise to carry a small personal kit containing plasters (band-aids), antiseptic wipes, rehydration salts, and any personal prescription medications you need. 10. An Open Heart and a Travel Journal The most important thing to pack isn’t physical. Bring a journal to document your feelings, the stories the children tell you, and the lessons you learn. This journey will go by fast writing it down helps the impact last a lifetime. Are you ready to join us? At Africa Watoto, we believe that every volunteer brings a unique gift to our community. By packing right, you’re one step closer to a smooth, meaningful, and unforgettable experience in Tanzania.
